Famed Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein preferred nonprofessional actors for ideological reasons: the Communist masses, not individuals, were the main subjects of his films; Eisenstein also believed that nonprofessional actors could best represent the types of working-class men and their oppressors, such as capitalist, Russian Orthodox priest, and tsarist military forces.
